Beauty is skin deep. However, to bring out that beauty and look stunning, you need to abide by a few rules. This season, make a resolution to reinvent yourself and blossom into an ultimate, absolutely gorgeous diva, states Gargy Sarkar
Change is inevitable. Change is necessary. We all are aware of this, but very few of us take the plunge to bring about that change in themselves, especially when it comes to the beauty plan. If you have been wondering about a makeover lately, now is the time to act. It doesn’t always have to be drastic, but a little modification in your hairstyle, styling and make-up will do the trick; you just need to know how to go about it. Here is a complete lowdown on how to design a whole new look for this New Year!
Get skin deep
With winter setting in, our skin needs the most attention as it tends to become dry and flaky. Not only the skin, but the hair too gives way in such harsh weather conditions, becoming dry and brittle. To avoid this, start taking care of your hair and skin from the very beginning. “In this season, the golden rule that stays true to skincare is CTM,” believes Dr Soma Sarkar, Cosmetologist and Dermatologist, Clinical Head, About Face, Mumbai. She further adds, “The cleanser should be mild in nature, and instead of toners you can opt for rosewater. Besides, use a hyaluronic acid based moisturiser to keep your skin nourished and do not forget to apply broad spectrum sunscreen while stepping out of the house.” Follow this simple skincare regimen and embrace the lovely season.
Treat the crust
Groom and treat your skin with occasional spas and facials once in a while. Especially during winters, our skin needs all the tender, loving, care it deserves. Dr Soma Sarkar suggests, “For this season, go for the hydration facial which includes products and Meso therapy with hyaluronic acid and a moisturising pack. If one wants the dewy and more hydrated look, go for Restylane Vital Meso therapy, which can be taken once in two months. It’s a complete treatment for dehydrated skin.”
Paint your face
Donning the right make-up can do wonders to your overall appearance. It’s all about doing up your face with just the right make-up, adapting to newer trends and tweaking old tricks for a better you. Celebrity make-up artist Shraddha Naik Alkunte opines, “This season we are looking at sheer, natural make-up as opposed to caked-up looks. Less is more—is the mantra this season.” Every season has its own flavour; look up those trending options and adapt them in your style for a mesmerising result. With every season, the usage of make-up products also differs. Shraddha believes, “As the temperature drops further, one has to make essential changes in the make-up products they use, the way they make changes in their clothing. Furthermore, winters bring in dry, irritable skin, and the best resort to skip this is by opting for all-liquid make-up for a buttery smooth effect.”
The three make-up products Shraddha Naik Alkunte swears by for winter are:
- Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is a must-have for this season, as it works best for chapped lips and flaky skin.
- Benefit mascara to brighten up the eyes.
- Forests Essentials night cream, to get rid of dry winter skin at night

Beautifully Yours
Say hi to the fresh and new-fangled look this New Year with this simple guide put together by Shraddha Naik Alkunte.
Step 1: Foundation
For anything that needs to stand for long, the foundation must be strong. And this also applies to make-up. The base in make-up is of utmost importance, and to achieve flattering results, moisturise your face with perfection. If you have any problem areas on your face, use a concealer to hide them. Select a foundation that suits your skin tone and dab it on your face evenly, starting at the centre of your face.
MS recommends: L’Oreal, Bobby Brown and Armani.
Step 2: Eyes
A clean swipe of powder pink eye-shadow will help you achieve a fresh, natural look. Define your eyes with a simple flick or a cat eye liner that will go well for any occasion. For adding drama, wear loads of mascara.
MS recommends: Maybelline New York Falsies Big Eyes Mascara
Step 3: Cheeks
Allow your cheeks a fresh flush of colour. Go for coral tints that will make you look dewy and beautiful in the daytime. For an evening rendezvous, opt for a little shimmer.
MS recommends: Maybelline Cheeky Glow Fresh Coral Blush
Step 4: Nails
Paint your nails with vibrant hues. With the subtle make-up, bright nails will look extremely attractive.
MS recommends: NATIO Camelia Nailpaint
Step 5: Lips
Let your lips shine with glistening gloss. Go for soft pink or coral shades that will make your lips look healthy and juicy.
MS recommends: NATIO Rich Colour Crème Gloss
Step 6: Hair
Going hand in hand with the natural make-up look, let your hair remain underplayed and clean. Straight hair with middle parting or a sleek back pony tail or a sleek top knot is in this season.

Wet slicked back hair
This hairstyle is perfect at achieving a clean, fresh and simple look, and is ideal for those with an oval-shaped face as it lays emphasis on your natural shape.
Step 1: Start by combing your hair back while it is still damp. Once your hair is swept back, apply lots of hairspray all over it. Continue doing this until your hair is almost wet with hairspray.
Step 2: Once the hair is dry, run your comb through your hair starting at your fringe. Only comb through the hair once as you do not want to remove any of the hairspray holding it back.
Step 3: If you are worried about the hair losing its shape, place a few clips behind the ears, this will ensure the hair remains slicked back throughout the day.

Be careful: Ensure you have washed your hair thoroughly before attempting this look. The biggest issue with this style is that if your hair hasn’t been washed with shampoo and conditioner, it can give the impression of greasy hair.
Windswept, the ‘undone braided wave’
If you’re looking for a trendy, relaxed style that suits a variety of head shapes then this new trend is perfect for you.
Step 1: After washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, blow dry your hair so it’s smooth, but be careful not to lose all your texture by over drying.
Step 2: Apply a texturising spray and work it from your roots to the tips of the hair. If you have relatively thick hair this won’t be as crucial, but for those who have very fine hair it will provide the illusion of more hair and help your hair hold longer.
Step 3: Create waves in your hair by taking two inch sections and wrapping each around a curling wand. Wrap the hair around the whole barrel, leaving an inch at the bottom.
Step 4: Once the hair is wrapped around the barrel, release all the hair and gather it together while holding it at the bottom. To create a more natural look and maintain the texture, shake it out while it’s still hot.

Dual textured hair
Combining two elements can give your hair a unique look and really make you stand out from the crowd. It is however the hardest look to achieve and requires practice in order to perfect.
Step 1: Start by prepping your hair with a styling mousse, as this will protect your hair and help you style with ease.
Step 2: The next step is to section your hair in order to create your dual textures. Starting at your nape, take a horizontal section across your head. Divide this section into smaller sections by creating vertical partings. The number of partings will depend on the width of your head, but the average number of sections is between two and four.
Step 3: Start twisting the parting section until it loops back on itself creating a small bun. Fasten these with a pin curl clip and spray with hairspray. Secure and set the curls by continuing to spray with hairspray and use a flat iron to clamp down each section. Continue to do this until you reach the top of your ears.
Step 4: Wait until the hair has cooled down and then proceed to take the pins out of the twirls and brush them out using your fingers.
Step 5: Sweep the front section of your hair behind your ears with a comb. In order to make the division between the two textures clear, use a subtle hair-band to tie back the lower section of your hair. This is a perfect way to spice up a sophisticated look with a modern vibe.
